The number of residents had grown to over 200 by the time of fall and many considered the name "Last Chance" was too absurd. Seven men, most likely self-appointed, met on the evening of October 30th, 1864 to identify the town and approve the street's design. They also appointed commissioners. The first suggestion of the committee was Tomah which was associated with local Indian people. Squashtown[21] and Pumpkinville[20were also suggested, since the meeting was held on the day prior to Halloween. Some suggested naming the community in honor of Minnesota towns such as Winona or Rochester because many of the settlers came from Minnesota. John Summerville, a Scotsman from Scotland proposed Helena. He made the pronunciation"h@'li:n@/ H@-LEE–n@ 21] to honor Helena Township, Scott County Minnesota. The previous Confederates present were in an uproar and demanded that Helena be named HEL-ie-n@ in honor of Helena, Arkansas. This was a city located on the Mississippi River. While Helena was the winner of the contest, pronunciations varied up to 1882 and the most popular pronunciation was /'helIn@/HELi-n@. The stories that followed about Helena's name suggested that it was the result of Napoleon's exile from St. Helena or was due to a sibling mining relationship.
