Winfrey was born in Milwaukee however, she was born into the poverty of a single mom living in rural Mississippi. She says she was molested during her teens and youth. When she was 14 she was pregnant. The baby was born prematurely, and passed away in the infant stage. Winfrey was transferred to Nashville, Tennessee to live with Vernon Winfrey. She was an anchor on the radio for the local news at night and was also a anchor co-anchor. Her empathetic and extemporaneous delivery has led her to switch to talk shows that aired during the day. She could take the Chicago-based talk show from third place to first and later launch her own production firm. The show is centered around the arts, self-improvement and mindfulness. While she faced criticism for her controversial self-help concepts and for promoting a confessional society, Winfrey has been praised for her capacity to conquer obstacles and be a generous donor. In fact the president Obama gave Winfrey the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2013. Her own network was founded in 2008 and named it the Oprah Winfrey Network.
