Ketogenic diet

The ketogenic diet, which is rich in fat, sufficient protein and is low in carbohydrates is commonly used in treatment for epilepsy in children that are difficult to control or resistant. The diet forces the body to burn fats rather than carbohydrates.Normally carbohydrates in food are converted into glucose, which is then transported around the body and is important in fueling brain function. If there isn't enough carbohydrates in the diet the liver converts fats into fatty acids, or ketones. These fat acids are then absorbed to the brain, where they replace glucose as a source of energy. The presence of ketosis (ketone bodies) in the blood ultimately reduces seizures caused by epilepsy. Half of epileptic adolescents and children who have tried this diet experience less seizures. The effects persist even after the diet has been ended. Constipation is a common side effect, as are high cholesterol. Acidosis, growth slowing and kidney stones.
