Hogan started his professional wrestling career in 1977. He was later accepted by the World Wrestling Federation (now WWE) in 1983. His fame as an American superstar helped launch the professional wrestling boom of the 1980s. He headlined eight of nine Wrestlemania's first nine editions. In his first run in the championship, he was crowned the WWF Championship five times, the first time being second longest in the tournament's history. He was the first wrestler in history to be the winner of consecutive Royal Rumble matches. He took them both in 1990 and 1991. He beat Andre the Giant in the Main Event of WWF The Main Event, 5 February 1988. The match is still held by American television viewership records with an 15.2 Nielsen rating, and 33 million viewers. Hogan quit the WWF to join the rival organization World Championship Wrestling (WCW) in 1993. Hogan was the winner of the WCW World Heavyweight Championship six times, and is the holder of the record for having the longest-running reign. In 1996, he underwent an era of career growth after adopting the villainous persona of "Hollywood" Hulk Hogan, as the leader of the popular New World Order (nWo) stable. The result was that Hogan became a prominent figure during the "Monday Night Wars" Another boom of professional wrestling in the mainstream. He was the headliner at WCW's flagship event Starrcade three times more including the biggest WCW pay-per-view ever Starrcade 1997.
