Collinsworth's unique blend of speed and height drew attention from college football programs throughout the South. Collinsworth was granted an athletic scholarship from Doug Dickey to the University of Florida, Gainesville, Florida. Collinsworth was initially selected to the Gators for their option offense, as a running quarterback. However, Collinsworth made a remarkable touchdown pass to Derrick Gaffney to score a touchdown that was 99 yards. This throw remains the longest touchdown in NCAA history. In his first year as a coach Steve Spurrier, a former Gator quarterback, was named Collinsworth's position coach at wide receiver. Collinsworth excelled at his new job, even though Florida's offense wasn't enough to save Dickey and his team. Collinsworth was named a first-team All-Southeastern Conference (SEC) selection in 1978, 1979, and 1980. He was also named as a first-team All-American as well as a first-team Academic All-America in 1980. 8. Collinsworth as a captain of the senior team was the most significant player on the team's one-year turnaround in NCAA Division I football. The Gator team increased to 8-4 in 1979 following a record of 0-10-1 in 1979. It was Charlie Pell's first season in Florida as the head coach. Collinsworth was awarded the Tangerine Bow's MVP after his college career.
