Before becoming a comedian, Lee worked in various cafes and restaurants. The coffee house which he worked at was abruptly shut down in 1994. "I just went next door to get a job," he said, "which was The Comedy Store in San Diego" (also known as the La Jolla Comedy Store) After a few months of working odd tasks at the club, the comedian decided to attempt stand-up on one of their amateur nights. Within a year of doing regular comedy sets, he received offers to perform for Pauly Shore and Carlos Mencia.Lee continued to perform frequently at The Comedy Store in Los Angeles which is a comedy venue operated by Pauly Shore's mother, Mitzi.Lee has said that his parents had hoped they would allow him to continue working in the family business but they were not supportive of his comedic pursuits at first. During a podcast interview conducted by comedian and actor Joe Rogan on February 1, 2011, Lee claimed that during the first few years he did stand-up his parents barely talked to him. However, after his appearance on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno his father contacted him to ask how much he would have to pay to be on the show and then apologized for not being supportive of his comedic career.Lee has included his family in some of his performances as well as his younger brother who has been featured in a variety of non-speaking roles on MADtv, and his entire family was featured in a sketch for the show. Lee proposed an unscripted sitcom about a Korean family to Comedy Central in 2007. He was scheduled to host the 9th MusiCares MAP Fund Benefit Concert 2013.
