He was awarded an award for merit in the Student Academy Awards. He traveled by train to New York City to perform at comedy clubs such as Catch a Rising Star and The Improv. The show included a segment where he performed the Beatles song "While My Guitar Gently weeps". He utilized the water bottle to make his guitar appear to be crying. In 1978 the year the student completed his studies at Temple with the degree of Bachelor of Arts. After a couple of days, he made the decision to leave the University of Southern California graduate programs. In the following days the same day, he said he was 22 years old, a "cocky and overweight person" who had his appendix removed, almost dying in the process, and "got over being overweight or cocky". Bob Kushell further discussed his burst appendix. He said it happened on the 4th of July, at UCLA Medical Center. The surgeons applied ice to the appendix for 7 hours before taking it out. They discovered that it was an appendix that was gangrenous.
