Trebek was born on July 22, 1940, in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada, the son of George Edward Trebek (born Terebeychuk), a chef who had emigrated from Ukraine as a child, and Lucille Marie Lagace (April 14, 1921 - 2016), a Franco-Ontarian.Trebek had roots in Renfrew County, Ontario, where his maternal grandmother was born in Mount St. Patrick near Renfrew. Trebek was raised bilingually, both in French as well as English. Trebek was almost exiled from the boarding school to which he was given by his parents. He attended a military college soon after, but he dropped out when he was asked to cut his hair. Trebek was just 13 years old when he began his first job as a bellhop at the restaurant where his father worked as a chef. Trebek was 13 years old when he began his career as a bellhop in the hotel in which his father was employed as a chef. At the time, he was looking for a job as a journalist for broadcast.
