Henner was a student in 1971 at the University of Chicago's Hyde Park neighborhood of Chicago was the first person to take on the part of Marty in Grease's Kingston Mines production. She was given the chance to reprise her role after the show moved to Broadway. But she chose to play "Marty," in the national touring company along with John Travolta who was playing "Doody". Henner is also credited with Broadway credits, including Over Here! with Travolta and a revival of Pal Joey. Social Security was also renewed. The Tale of the Allergist's Wife is another Broadway credits. Her first film appearance in 1977's sleeper hit Between the Lines. It was a comedy that featured then unknown actors John Heard and Lindsay Crouse. Her next film role was a co-star with Richard Gere, in 1978's Bloodbrothers. She gained notoriety for her role in the film as Elaine Nardo in Taxi. The character is an unmarried mother who works as a taxi driver, and hopes to become an artist. In 1982's Hammett, produced by Wim Wim Wenders, and starring Frederic Forrest as her husband as the main character. Henner was the complete opposite of Burt Reynolds in The Man Who Loved Women (1983) produced by Blake Edwards. Reynolds requested Henner as well as Shirley MacLaine (and Dom DeLuise) to be part of Cannonball Run II later in the year. In the 1984 film Johnny Dangerously, she was the lead actress and took on the role of Michael Keaton's love-interest. She was in Perfect again alongside John Travolta in 1985. She played opposite Steve Martin as Trudi in L.A. Story in 1991. The performance brought her an American Comedy Award nomination as the most funny supporting female character in the field of Motion Picture. She was a co-star with Burt Reynolds from 1990 to 1994 in Evening Shade, a situation comedy that also starred Ossie Davis, Hal Holbrook, and Hal Holbrook. She also appeared in the film Noises Off (1992) as well as Man on the Moon (1999) that is a documentary that tells the story of Andy Kaufman, her Taxi co-star. Henner also voiced her Taxi character. She was the voice of Gotham City socialite Veronica Vreeland's voice on Batman: The Animated Series (1992-1999) as well as reprised her voice in Batman: Mask of the Phantasm (1993) as well as Batman & Mr. Freeze: SubZero (1998). She was the host of Marilu for the duration of 165 episodes from 1994.
