Vladimir Putin

Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin (born 7 October 1952) is a Russian politician and former intelligence officer, who currently holds the office of president of Russia. Since 1999, Putin has been president or prime minister continuously. Putin was prime minister between 1999 and 2000, from 2008 to 2012 and president between 2008 and 2012. Putin worked 16 years as a KGB Foreign Intelligence officer prior to when he resigned in 1991 to pursue a political career. In 1996, he relocated to Moscow to become a part of the Boris Yeltsin administration. He briefly served as director of the Federal Security Service (FSB) as well as secretary of the Security Council of Russia, before being appointed as prime minister in August 1999. Following the resignation of Yeltsin, Putin became Acting President of Russia and, just 4 months later, was elected in a straight-line vote to his first term as president. In 2004, he was reelected. Putin was limited by constitutional law to serve only two years as president. He was a prime Minister under Dmitry Medvedev from 2008 to 2012. He returned to the presidency in 2012 in an election marred by accusations of fraud as well as protests and was reelected in the year 2018. In April 2021, in the wake of an election, he signed in law constitutional amendments, including one that allows him to run for reelection two times further, possibly extending the presidency until 2036.
