Tulsi Gabbard (/'t^lsi "'gaeb@rd'born on April 12, 1981) is an American politician, United States Army Reserve officer, and political commentator who was the U.S. representative for Hawaii's 2nd district in the congressional elections from 2013 until 2021. Gabbard was the first Hindu member of Congress and was also the first American Samoan to vote of Congress. Gabbard was a candidate in the 2020 United States presidential elections for the Democratic nomination. She also served as an officer in the field medic section of the Hawaii Army National Guard, and was assigned to Iraq during 2004-2005. Gabbard was also stationed in Kuwait in 2008-2009 as an Army Military Police platoon commander. While a member of Congress she was a vice chair of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) from 2013 until 2016. She resigned in order to join Bernie Sanders' campaign for the 2016 Democratic presidential nomination.
