Mays was born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He attended Louisiana State University Laboratory School (U-High) and began playing basketball on the team's varsity team in eighth grade. As a freshman, Mays began to dunk basketball. He was a first-teamer All State in the second and third seasons of his. In his junior season his average was 9.1 points, 8.1 assists and 3.2 rebounds. Mays moved to Findlay Prep in Henderson, Nevada in the final year of his senior year . He averaged 10.9 points, 5.3 assists, 3.0 rebounds and 2.7 steals in his one season with the Pilots.Rated as a three-star prospect, Mays committed to play basketball in college at Louisiana State during his sophomore year. He then decided to open his recruiting to other schools shortly before the time he was transferred to Findlay. Mays eventually re-committed to LSU after having considered proposals from Baylor, UNLV, Oklahoma State, Memphis, California and Stanford.
