Sheikh Mohammed was a member of Osama bin Laden's al-Qaeda organization, leading the organization's propaganda activities from 1999 until late 2001. On March 1, 2003, Mohammed was captured in Rawalpindi (Pakistan) by an operation involving the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency and Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence. Mohammad was taken to the secret CIA prisons in Afghanistan and Poland within minutes of his capture. He was then interrogated by U.S. operatives. [8] By December 2006, he'd been transferred to military custody at Guantanamo Bay detention camp.In March 2007 following lengthy interrogations Mohammed admitted to having been the mastermind of the September 11 attacks as well as the Richard Reid shoe bombing attempt to destroy an airliner; the Bali nightclub bombing in Indonesia as well as the 1993 World Trade Center bombing; the murder of Daniel Pearl; and various unsuccessful attacks in addition to a variety of other crimes. He was charged in February 2008 with murder and war crimes by a U.S. military commission at Guantanamo Bay, a detention facility that could result in the death penalty if found guilty. In 2012 an ex-military prosecutor had criticized the trial as unsupportable because of confessions made during torture. A 2008 decision of the United States Supreme Court had been able to question the legitimacy of the procedures used to gain such admissions and the admissibility of such confessions in criminal proceedings.
