Self-esteem

The concept of self-esteem as a distinct psychological construct has its origins in the work of psychologist, philosopher geologist, anthropologist, and geologist William James (1892). James recognized the multiple aspects of the self on two levels: the processes of understanding (called "I-self"), and the resulting knowledge (called "Me-self") The self's observation and the storage of those observations by the I-self generates three types of knowledge which collectively account for the Me-self, as per James. The material self, social self, and spiritual self. The social self is most closely to self-esteem and includes all the characteristics that are appreciated by other people. The material self consists of representations of body and possessions. The spiritual self is comprised composed of descriptive representations and judgmental dispositions about the self. Self-esteem today is described as the sum of an individual's self-esteem.
