He was a student of economics at Harvard University and business administration at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile. According to Forbes, his wealth was valued at 2.8 billion dollars as of the year 2019. The president was a part of the conservative-liberal National Renewal party. In 1990 the year he was elected a senator from East Santiago. He lost the election in 2005 to Michelle Bachelet and then ran again in 2010 and won the presidency. He was Chile's first president who was conservative in 1958.
