On the 31st of August in 2020, Ronald Merle McNutt, 33, an American man, attempted suicide by shooting himself under the chin using a pump action shotgun during an Facebook livestream that became a viral sensation on social media platforms. The case was particularly notable because of the indignation displayed by some internet users towards McNutt's passing. Additionally Facebook's response time was slow. The livestream had been posted on a variety of other platforms and had accumulated many views before it was taken down. Video platform TikTok was also slow to respond to the clip, which appeared in many user feeds and was repeatedly re-uploaded, which led to a number of users choosing to boycott the platform. [1] The case has raised awareness about both suicide prevention and what duty of care social media platforms owe to protect users and victim reputations online in relation to content that is graphic.
