Mary (Nabokov novel)

Mary is a story about Lev Glebovich Ganin (a Russian exile who was also an ex- White Guard Officer, but was forced to leave Russia due to the Russian Revolution). Ganin is now living in Berlin with Klara and a young Russian girl, and the Podtyagin. There is also a neighbor, Aleksey Afyorovich Alfyorov. Ganin meets him in a dark, decayed elevator at the start of. Ganin discovers from Alfyorov that Mary who was his first love has become his wife. He also snaps an image. Ganin is shocked by that this is the case and breaks off his relationship with Lyudmila. Ganin is absorbed in the memories of his time spent with Mary in Russia and what Ganin claims were the "happiest moments" of his life. Ganin is in awe of Mary's dream and refuses to let Alfyorov get her. He then attempts to reconnect with Mary whom he believes is in love with Ganin. Ganin finally declares that he'll be leaving Berlin in the evening prior to when Mary arrives. The other residents of the house organize a celebration for Ganin. Ganin continues to drink to Alfyorov by drinking alcohol. Alfyorov is set to sink to sleep after a night of drinking when Ganin insists Ganin to set his alarm to half-past seven since Alfyorov is planning to meet Mary at the station on the next day. Ganin is enthralled by Mary set the alarm for 11 and plans to meet Mary at the train station. There is a brief moment of clarity when he leaves his home. "The universe of memory Ganin was living in changed into the reality that it was the far-off past... Without this image, there is no way that Mary existed or was able to exist." Ganin rather than meeting Mary chooses to take the train for France.
