Leonardo di ser Piero da Vinci[b] (15 April 1452 - 2 May 1519) was an Italian polymath of the High Renaissance who was active as artist, draughtsman engineer, scientist, theorist, sculptor, and architect. His fame was initially based on his accomplishments as painter. However, his notebooks are what made him famous. In them, he made notes and drawings on many subjects such as the sciences of anatomy, astronomy, and cartography. Leonardo is generally believed to be genius, who was the epitomization of Renaissance humanism. His work is a contribution to later generations that artists are able to only surpass the work of his predecessor, Michelangelo. Born in marriage to a notary who was successful and a poor woman close to or in Vinci his hometown, he was educated in Florence by the Italian artist and sculpturer Andrea del Verrocchio. His professional career started in the city. He then spent much of his time working at Ludovico Sanforza's service in Milan. He returned to work in Florence and Milan and then briefly in Rome. In all his work attracted a significant number of imitators and students. Francis I invited him to France where he spent the final three years of his life. He died in 1519. After his demise, there hasn't been a moment when his achievements, diverse pursuits, personal lives, and empirical thinking have failed to incite interest and admiration, making his name a regular cultural subject.
