Katharine Juliet Ross (born January 29th, 1940)is an American film stage, television, and film actress. Her awards include an Academy Award nomination, one BAFTA Award, and two Golden Globe Awards. A native of Los Angeles, Ross spent much of her youth in the San Francisco Bay Area. After attending Santa Rosa Junior College for one year, Ross joined The Actors Workshop in San Francisco, and began acting in stage productions.Ross made her debut film appearance in the drama about the Civil War Shenandoah (1965) as well as was a supporting character in Mister Buddwing (1965) and The Singing Nun (1966) before being cast in Curtis Harrington's Games (1967) which was a thriller co-starring James Caan and Simone Signoret. Signoret recommended that Ross be cast in Mike Nichols' comedy-drama The Graduate (1967). She received significant critical acclaim including an Academy Award nomination as Best Supporting Actress, BAFTA nomination as well as an award-winning Golden Globe win as New Star of the Year. In 1968, Ross played a part in the John Wayne movie Hellfighters playing his daughter Tish Buckman. Her recognition was further boosted by her part in two western films in 1969: Tell Them Willie Boy is Here, and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.
