International Women's Day

International Women's Day (IWD) is a global holiday celebrated each year on March 8 to be an event of significance in the movement for women's rights by bringing focus to issues like gender equality, reproductive rights, and violence and abuse against women. IWD was an inspiration from the universal female vote movement in New Zealand. It originated in labor movements across North America, Europe and North America in the early 20th centuries. The earliest version was purportedly a "Women's Day" that was organized by the Socialist Party of America in New York City February 28 1909. German delegates to the 1910 International Socialist Women's Conference suggested that "a special Women's Day" should be held annually. However, there was no date fixed. The first International Women's Day commemorations were held in Europe the year after. IWD became a holiday of the nation in March 1917, the year that women were granted suffrage in Soviet Russia. This was the first day of the February Revolution. The holiday was later celebrated in communist countries and the social movement. The holiday was linked to extreme-leftist governments and movements until it was adopted by the feminist movement worldwide in the latter half of the 1960s. After its 1977 adoption by the United Nations, IWD was made a global mainstream holiday.
