International Women's Day (IWD) is a global holiday celebrated annually on March 8 as a focal point in the feminist movement, bringing attention to issues such as equality of gender, reproductive rights, and violence and abuse against women.Spurred by the worldwide female suffrage movement that began in New Zealand, IWD originated from labor-related movements across North America and Europe during the first half of the 20th century. The earliest version was purportedly the "Women's Day" that was organized by the Socialist Party of America in New York City February 28, 1909. This inspired German participants during the 1910 International Socialist Women's Conference to propose "a particular Women's Day" be organized every year, but with no set date; in the next year, there were the first celebrations and demonstrations of International Women's Day across Europe. IWD became a national holiday in Soviet Russia on March 8 in 1917, which marked the start of February's Revolution. The holiday was later recognized by communist nations and the social movement. The holiday was often associated with governments and far-left movement until it was taken up by feminists in the late 1960s. Following its adoption by the United Nations in197, IWD became a worldwide major holiday.
