Cutkosky began making photo ads when he was just four years old as an opportunity for his mom and Cutkosky to bond. After a few commercials Cutkosky was invited to participate in commercials and later, movies. When he was seven years old, Cutkosky landed his first movie role in the role of Carl in the comedy Christmas Fred Claus (2007). Cutkosky aged nine, played the part of a mythical spirit called Barto in The Unborn (2009). Also, he had the opportunity to perform alongside Gary Oldman. Cutkosky was chosen to play Carl Gallagher, the second-youngest Gallagher sibling and the most problematic character in the show's Shameless in 2009. Shameless was on for 11 seasons until 2021, and is currently the longest running original scripted show on Showtime's history.
