Portnoy left the Yankee Group after four years and launched Barstool Sports in 2003. The newspaper was initially not successful. But it began to gain popularity after Portnoy began putting pictures of bikinis-clad women on the front page of the newspaper. Barstool Sports became a blog in 2007. Portnoy slowly developed his persona as "El Presidente", an honest and open writer. Portnoy's writing was highly regarded by males and the blog was a standard in bro culture. Portnoy was sexist in his comment in the 2016 Barstool video. Portnoy later regretted his decision.
