Hughes has written and presented numerous documentaries and shows about topics from the past and present. She was awarded the Naomi Sargant Special Award for outstanding broadcasting in the field of education in 2009 and also the Norton Medlicott Awards for historic service by the Historical Association in 2012. In 2011, she delivered the Hellenic Institute's Tenth Annual Lecture "Ta Erotika, The Things of Love" and in 2011, she gave the Huw Wheldon Memorial lecture at the Royal Television Society. Her thesis was that the history of television is thriving and experiencing a new golden age. She was awarded the title of distinguished Friend of Oxford University in 2014.
