 Thomas Cruise Mapother IV (born July 3 1962) is professionally known as Tom Cruise, is an American actor and producer. One of the most highly-paid actors, he has won many awards, including the Honorary Palme d'Or and three Golden Globe Awards, in addition to nominations for three Academy Awards. The films of his have grossed four billion dollars in North America and over $11.1 billion worldwide,[2] making him one of the highest-grossing box-office stars ever of all time.Cruise began acting in the 1980s, and made his breakthrough with the lead roles in the comedy film Risky Business (1983) and action film Top Gun (1986). Critical acclaim came with his roles in the dramas The Color of Money (1986), Rain Man (1988) and Born on the Fourth of July (1989). In the role of Ron Kovic in the latter the film, he received a Golden Globe Award and received a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actor. As a leading Hollywood star in the 90s, he was featured in several commercially successful films that included the drama A Few Good Men (1992) as well as the action thriller The Firm (1993), the horror film Interview with the Vampire (1994), and the romance Jerry Maguire (1996). He won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor and was nominated again for an Academy Award. Cruise's role as a motivational speaker on the film Magnolia (1999) brought him another Golden Globe Award and a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.Since then, Cruise has largely starred in action and science fiction films, making himself known as an action star, often doing his own dangerous stunts. From 1996 to 2018, he played Ethan Hunt in six Mission: Impossible movies. From 1996 to the year 2018, he played Ethan Hunt in six Mission: Impossible films. He has three children, two of whom were adopted during the marriage of Kidman and the third of whom is his biological daughter that he had with Holmes. Cruise is an active advocate for Scientology. He credits it with helping him overcome his dyslexia. In the 2000s the cleric sparked controversy over his critiques of psychiatry and antidepressant medications as well as his efforts to promote Scientology in Europe, and a leaked video interview of Cruise advocating for Scientology.
