Diaz was a contestant in The Ultimate Fighter 5. This show featured only lightweights competing on Jens Pulver's team. Diaz defeated Rob Emerson in the preliminary round via submission. In the quarterfinals, Corey Hill defeated Diaz through a triangle choke submission. Diaz beat Gray Maynard, a Team Penn participant, via submission in the semis. He then made it to the finals, in which he faced Manvel Gamburyan, a teammate. Diaz defeated Gamburyan by submission after Gamburyan was forced to take out during the second round because of the dislocation of his right shoulder as the result of attempting a takedown. After the win, Diaz took home The Ultimate Fighter
