Thomas Cruise Mapother IV, born July 3rd 1962, is an American actor. He is one of the highest-paid actors on the planet and has been honored with an Honorary Palme d'Or, three Golden Globe Awards, as well as nominations for three Academy Awards. His films have earned more than four billion dollars in North America and over $11.1 billion across the globe which makes him one of the highest-grossing box-office actors of all time.Cruise started acting in the 1980s, and made his breakthrough by playing lead parts in the comedy Risky Business (1983) and action film Top Gun (1986). His roles in the dramas The Color of Money (1986), Rain Man (88) and Born on the Fourth of July (89) earned him praise from critics. He was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor for his character Ron Kovic in the film. He was a huge Hollywood star during the 90s. He was a part of several films that were commercially successful such as the romantic comedy A Few Good Men (1992) as well as the thriller The Firm (93), the horror movie Interview with the Vampire (1994) and the romantic comedy Jerry Maguire (1996). In the latter film, he won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor and was awarded his second Academy Award nomination. Cruise's performance as an actor and motivational speaker in Magnolia (1999) won him another Golden Globe Award. He was also nominated for the Academy Award Best Supporting Actor.
