The Ring is a 2002 American supernatural horror film directed by Gore Verbinski from a screenplay by Ehren Kruger, starring Naomi Watts, Martin Henderson, David Dorfman, Brian Cox and Daveigh Chase. It's a remake of Hideo Nagata's Japanese horror film Ring from 1998, which is inspired by Koji Suzuki's 1991 novel. Watts portrays a journalist looking into the ghostly tape that is believed to have killed the viewer 7 days before it premiered in theaters. The film received mostly positive reviews with critics applauding Watts's performance as well as the mood. It was among the most successful horror remakes, grossing over $249 million worldwide with a budget of $48 million. It is the first installment of the English-language Ring series, which is followed by The Ring Two (2005) and Rings (2017The Ring paved the way for remakes in English of Asian horror films like The Grudge and Dark Water.
