Rattler was a student at Pinnacle High School, Phoenix, Arizona for his four years of high school. When he turned 18 years old, Rattler broke the Arizona school record for the highest number of passes. Rattler was a quarterback for 11,083 yards over four seasons, and scores of 116 touchdowns passing. Rattler also ran for 1,040 yards, and scored 14 touchdowns rushing. He was awarded the MVP of the Elite 11 in Texas in his senior year. In his final year at Pinnacle Rattler was featured in the Netflix documentary QB1: Beyond the Lights, produced by Peter Berg. Rattler was suspended for violating the district's code of conduct, and was not allowed to play for the rest of the season.
