When he was 17 years old, Harrison was a guest at a barn dance at which he met his future wife, Joanne Rhue, the daughter of Joseph Rhue, a county judge who later became one of the lead lawyers for Philip Morris in North Carolina. He and Joanne were married in the year 1960. However, Harrison was convicted of having stolen a car. After his arrest, he was allowed to pick between prison or the military. Harrison decided to go to prison, entering the United States Navy in October 1958. Joanne fell pregnant immediately after their wedding. The first baby, Sherry, was born with Down syndrome. The three sons they had were Rick, Chris, and Joseph. Harrison was removed from the Navy in February 1962. She reenlisted 14 months later to be able to claim the health benefits that Sherry needed to pay for her medical expenses. She died when she was six years old.
