It is 1954 in Austin, Texas and Nadine Hightower (Kim Basinger), a pregnant woman is in trouble. Raymond Escobar (Jerry Stiller) an unsavory photographer took Nadine to his studio to retrieve some photos. He was "lots more artistic than I had hoped for." Escobar assures her that he is familiar with Hugh Hefner and she will surely make it to the top. But Nadine isn't sure, because she has photos she would like to be returned, and when she heads back to the studio to retrieve them, gets caught up in the middle of a murder scene. She grabs an envelope containing her name, and leaves. The problem is that the wrong photos are taken. She has stolen plans for a brand new highway project that is in the hands of her ex- husband Vernon (Jeff Bridges), a charming, smart-mouthed bumbler who owns a bar he calls the Blue Bonnet which no one visits, and that's not the worst of it. He's fooling around with an old Pecan Queen, who is employed by the Lone Star Brewing company (Glenne Headly). He sees a way to earn cash from all this.
