Margaret "Maggie" Fitzgerald, a waitress from the Ozarks, shows up at the Hit Pit, a rundown Los Angeles gym owned and run by Frankie Dunn. Dunn is an trainer from Ireland who has been who is reportedly estranged from his own daughter. Maggie asks Frankie to train her but he says no since he is not a trainer for women and she is too old for a boxing career. Eddie "Scrap-Iron" Dupris, Frankie's colleague and friend--the film's narrator--encourages and helps Maggie. Frankie's prize contender, "Big Willie", signs with Mickey Mack, a successful manager, after becoming angry with Frankie refusing to take offers for a champion bout. Frankie reluctantly agrees that Maggie is her new coach. Maggie fights her way up the women's amateur division under the direction of Frankie. Since she has earned an image of quick KOs, Frankie must resort to bribery to persuade other managers to put their trainee fighters up against her. Scrap is worried that Frankie does not want to take on her in large fights. Scrap arranges for Maggie to get to know Mickey Mack. However, Frankie's loyality makes it hard for Maggie to turn down. Frankie offers Maggie an Gaelic name, Mo Chuisle, which she puts on her boxing attire. However, she fails to explain the significance of it to her. The two go to Europe while she keeps winning; Maggie eventually saves up enough winnings to purchase her mother a house however, her mother scolds Maggie for threatening her government aid, claiming that everyone back home has a laugh at her.
