Son of Turkish immigrants, Oz was raised in Wilmington, Delaware, and graduated from Harvard University and the University of Pennsylvania. Dual citizens of both the U.S. and Turkey, Oz was in the Turkish Army in the 1980s for 60 days of mandatory training specifically designed for citizens living in foreign countries, to preserve his Turkish citizenship. He subsequently began his surgical residency at Columbia University Irving Medical Center in the year 1986. He was made a professor of surgery at Columbia University in 2001 and retired as professor emeritus in the year the year 2018. In 2009, The Dr. Oz Show is a weekly show on TV that focuses on medical issues and health, was launched by Winfrey's Harpo Productions and Sony Pictures Television, running for thirteen seasons. [9][10] Oz's promotion pseudoscience including topics like faith healing and alternative medical practices, has drawn criticism from a variety of medical journals and doctors.
