Taranenko trained at VSS Uradzhai in Minsk. He was a student at VSS Uradzhai , a Minsk-based training facility. Lifting in Canberra, Australia on November 26 in 1988, he established an all-time world record of 266 kg for the clean and jerk and 476 kg for the total, having achieved 210kg in the snatch. While these records were not recognized as world records because of subsequent changes to the weight classes for competition (in 1993 1998, 1993 and 2018), as of 2019 the clean and jerk remains the record-breaking weight achieved in competition till broken December 2021 by Lasha's 267kg , while his total of 476kg remains the most impressive ever until it was broken by Lasha Talakhadze of Georgia in the 2019 World Weightlifting Championships while also setting the record for clean and jerk of 264kg for the restructured weight classes. This was achieved by breaking Hossein Rezazadeh's world record from 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens for 263.5kg.In 1992, Taranenko represented the Unified Team in the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona. Taranenko took home the super-heavyweight silver medal by weighing 425kg.
