Idrissa Akuna Elba, OBE (/'IdrIs born 6 September 1972) is an English actor. He is a graduate of the National Youth Theatre in London and has gained notoriety for his roles in Stringer Bell in HBO's The Wire (2002-2004), DCI John Luther on BBC One (2010-2019) and Nelson Mandela in Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom (2013). He was nominated for four Golden Globe Awards for Best Actor and a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor for Luther. The latter won one. Elba also appeared in Ridley Scott’s American Gangster (2007) and Obsessed (2008). He was Heimdall in Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) starting with Thor (2011) and concluding with Bloodsport in The Suicide Squad (1921) that was set within the DC Extended Universe. He also played in Pacific Rim (2013), Beasts of No Nation (2015), for which he won Golden Globe and BAFTA nominations for Best Supporting Actor as well as Molly's Game (2017). Elba has voiced characters for Zootopia, The Jungle Book, Finding Dory (all 2016), and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (2022). In the year 2018, she made his directorial debut in the form of an adaptation of Victor Headley's 1992 novel Yardie.
