Hempel was founded by Jorgen Christian Hempel (1894 until 30 January, 1986) in the month of July 1915, when he established Hempel's Marine Paints Ltd. (J.C. Hempel's Skibsfarve-Fabrik A/S) as an importer of marine paints. Hempel was Denmark's newest licensed wholesaler, at just 21 years old. Hempel established his first paint mixing facility in 1917. It set up its first factory in the United States in 1951, and then opened a new office in Hong Kong in 1963. The company began producing decorative coatings for the Middle East in the 1960s. In 1963, it established its first office in Hong Kong. Hempel was among the first companies in the field of coatings that focused on renewable energy and also supplied coatings to the world's first commercial wind farm that was built in 1980.J.C. Hempel was the head of the company for seventy-one of those years, died in 1986 at age 91. By 2000, Hempel had become a large company, with local management in 38 countries. Over the next decade, the company consolidated by buying out its competitors in Croatia, China, Morocco and the Middle East
