In the village of Dorfil there were two brothers. The older one spent the fortune of the family on alcohol and gambling while the younger went away to join the Italian Army in Naples. Tobias returns home with his son. The villager's mock him and spread rumors about his life in Naples. The man becomes known as the Alm-Uncle since he lives in seclusion in the mountains of Alm. Two village girls, Dete and Adelheid, meet Tobias. When they get older, Dete takes a job in the town of Maienfeld in the Grisons and is employed as a hotel attendant. Adelheid and Tobias are carpenters. Their daughter was given the name Adelheid and Tobias, however Heidi is often referred to as Heidi. Following the death of Tobias, due to a workplace accident, Adelheid succumbs to shock. This is a blatant attack on God by the Alm-Uncle. Heidi was raised initially by her maternal grandmother in Maienfeld and Dete. Following the grandmother's demise, Dete is offered a decent job as a maid in the city and takes 5-year-old Heidi to her paternal grandfather's home, which is higher up than the Dorfil. ('small village' in Swiss German). He was in conflict with the villager and has been angered by God for many years. He now lives alone on the Alm and has been dubbed 'The Alm Uncle'. Though he initially doesn't like Heidi's visit, his obvious intelligence and cheerful, yet unaffected demeanour quickly earn him his genuine, even reserved, affection. Heidi is awed by her new friends, including youngsters Peter the goatherd as well as his mother Brigitte and his maternal grandmother who is blind. Each season passes and Heidi becomes more close to her mountaintop neighbours, Peter and his grandmother. But, the grandfather is unwilling to allow Heidi to go to school, and has a dispute with the schoolmaster and the pastor of the village and schoolmaster, who try to persuade him to go however Heidi is illiterate as a result.
