Derek Michael Chauvin (/’SoUv@n/SHOH-v@n) was an American ex-police officer who was found guilty of the murder of George Floyd, 46-year-old African American man who was killed in Minneapolis. Chauvin was a member of the Minneapolis Police Department from 2001 until 2020.Chauvin was knelt down on Floyd's neck for about nine minutes, while Floyd was in a handcuff and lay in the street, face down, shouting "I cannot breathe" during an arrest with three other officers on May 25 the 25th of May, 2020. On May 26, Chauvin was fired by the Minneapolis Police Department (MPD) and was arrested on May 29. [ On October 29, 2006, he was implicated in the shooting death of Ojibwe native Wayne Reyes by 23 gunshots. On the early morning of May 24 in 2008, Chauvin nearly killed unarmed Ira Latrell Toles by beating and shooting him twice. In August 2011, he taken off for three days due to his involvement in the shooting of unarmed Leroy Martinez In 2017, Chauvin injured a 14-year old black boy in the head with a flashlight and then held him down on his knees for more than 17 minutes, completely disregarding the boy's complaint that he could not breathe.
