The success of Burnham as an YouTube celebrity in the latter part of 2000 earned him recognition for his subversive comedy and humorous stand-up. Burnham released four comedy albums on Comedy Central Records and three comedy specials: Words, Words & Words (2010) and What. (2013) and Make Happy (2016). He also appeared in the MTV mockumentary Zach Stone is Gonna be Famous (2013) and was published Egghead or You'll Never Survive On Ideas Alone (2013). He announced a change in career from comedy performances in 2016 , before producing and directing the critically acclaimed drama film Eighth Grade (2018). He has directed comedy specials with other comedians, and was a part of Promising Young Women (2020) the Academy Award-winning comedy thriller.
