Trebek began his career with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation in 1961 prior to completing his bachelor's degree. Trebek stated that he attended school in the morning and then worked at night. He was in charge of everything, and replaced each announcer in turn. Trebek was later able to read the CBC radio news, and report on various special occasions for CBC Radio, CBC Television and CBC Radio. He was the first host of an Canadian music program known as Music Hop in 1963. He was host of Reach for the Top, the high school-based quiz show in the year 1966. He hosted the CBC from 1967 until 1970. He introduced classical music programming that included Glenn Gould's performance. He was host of the weekly skating show for a couple of seasons. Trebek was host of Strategy which was a daily afternoon game show beginning on April 1st in 1969. Trebek hosted Strategy the weekday afternoon game show from April 1st, 1969, until 1972. Ralph Mellanby preferred Trebek as his executive producer. However, Mellanby stated that he picked Dave Hodge in 2020 because his boss didn't want a person who had a mustache to host Hockey Night.
