 Hayes gained first traction with songs "The Streets" and "STFU". After sharing his poems with Lil Baby (the 4 Pockets Full) as well as Yo Gotti's Collective Music Group, (CMG) He signed to Interscope Records. 42 Dugg was a national sensation when he made an appearance on Lil Baby’s February 2020 single "Grace". The song was ranked at number 48 on the Billboard Hot 100. In May of 2020 42 Dugg was featured in Lil Baby's hit song "We Paid", which was ranked at number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100. The track's popularity boosted sales of the mixtape Young & Turnt 2, peaking at number 58 on the Billboard 200 and at number 6 on Billboard's Independent Albums chart. Hayes followed this success by doing guest features on tracks for other artists such as Marshmello, Lil Keed, Meek Mill, Blac Youngsta, Big Sean, T.I., Kaash Paige, Tory Lanez and Latto.On February 21, 2021, a shooting occurred at Roddy Ricch and 42 Dugg's music video shoot. The incident resulted in three victims being injured in Atlanta. OMB Peezy was later arrested for the shooting and an aggravated assault with weapons that could be deadly as well as the having firearms at the time of the commission of crime. The injured trio survived.In the month of May in 2021 Billboard named 42 Dugg the "R&B/Hip-Hop Rookie of the Month". Dugg also released the 19-track mixtape Free Dem Boyz on May 21st 2021. It was a an ode to his friends who were incarcerated. The "standout" track, "4 da Gang" is a collaboration with Roddy Ricch. Other guest tracks include Lil Durk and Rowdy Rebel. In 2021, he performed in the annual XXL Freshman Class.
