Brown was born in Jamestown. After attending home school for a period of two years, Brown enrolled in Greeneview High School where he struggled to fit in. Brown was raised in a small town with no hope of his career. He was an machinist in a small factory. Brown was frequently engaged in fights at parties, and he became dependent on methamphetamine. In his 20s Brown had suffered an overdose of heroin that earned him the name "The Immortal", was homeless and was sentenced to prison. Brown began to become interested in MMA after he started practicing submission holds while drinking. He had seen Ken Shamrock fight on VHS tapes from tapes of his friends. What began as an excursion to watch the fight of a friend transformed into a trip fueled by cocaine. Brown signed up for his first fight with only an hour's notice. Brown purchased a mouthpiece at an adjacent shop, then prepared it in an eatery nearby and won his first bout. Brown was defeated by a decision, and then lost a second time the following night. Brown's first formal training was in an Japanese Jiu-Jitsu gym. Brown agreed to fight within two weeks, using Muay Thai rules. Brown was defeated by a decision in a Sanhou match, and then returned to work the following night. Brown was later an Jorge Gurgel associate and started MMA training.
