Mariah Carey born March 27, 1969)[a] is an American singer as well as songwriter, actress and record producer. She is known as "Songbird Supreme" or "Queen of Christmas" for her five-octave voice and distinctive use of the whistle register and songwriting. Carey became a household name with her debut album. Carey changed her image after her split with Mottola and added hip-hop influences to Butterfly (1997). Billboard named Carey the artist of the Decade (1990s), while the World Music Awards recognized her as the top-selling female pop artist of the millennium.
After eleven years of U.S. number one singles, Carey signed a record contract worth $100 million with Virgin Records in 2001. Following her well-publicized physical and emotional breakdown and the failure of her movie Glitter (2001) as well as its soundtrack Virgin signed her contract at $28 million. The following year she signed with Island Records. Carey's album from 2005, The Emancipation of Mimi was a huge success. It was the second best-selling album in America , and the second highest-selling album in the world. Inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, Carey was inducted in 2022.
