 Susan Alexandra "Sigourney" Weaver (/sI'go:rni/;[1] born on October 8, 1949) is an American actress. A figure in science fiction and popular culture, [2] she has been awarded numerous awards such as an award from the British Academy Film Award, two Golden Globe Awards, and the Grammy Award, in addition to nominations for three Academy Awards, four Primetime Emmy Awards and a Tony Award. The actress was also voted the number 20 in the countdown of Channel 4's list of the 100 Greatest Movie Stars of All Time and was the only woman among the top 20.Weaver became famous after she was given the role of Ellen Ripley in the Ridley Scott directed science fiction film Alien (1979) in which she was nominated for the BAFTA Award for Most Promising Newcomer. She reprised the role with the critically acclaimed performance of James Cameron's Aliens (1986) in which she was awarded her first Academy Award nomination. She reprised the role in two sequels to the film: Alien 3 (1992) and Alien Resurrection (1997). The character is regarded as an important female protagonist in cinema history. [5] She also played the part of Dana Barrett in Ghostbusters II (1989), Ghostbusters (2016) and Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021). She appeared with Cameron as the role of Dr. Grace Augustine in Avatar (2009)--which is still the highest-grossing movie of all time and is scheduled to make a return appearance with Avatar: The Way of Water (2022). Her work is famous for its appearance on the Broadway stage, she was awarded an Tony Award nomination for her part in the musical Hurlyburly (1984). The acclaim continued to grow when she played the primatologist Dian Fossey in Gorillas in the Mist (1988) in which she won an Golden Globe Award, and in the same year, she won a second Golden Globe Award for her performance in Working Girl. Weaver became the first actor to win two acting awards at the Golden Globes the same year.
