Angela Bassett

  Angela Evelyn Bassett (born August 16th 1958) is an American actress. She is the recipient of many awards which include three Black Reel Awards, a Golden Globe Award, seven NAACP Image Awards, and a Screen Actors Guild Award, as well as nominations for one Academy Award and seven Primetime Emmy Awards.Bassett began her acting career in the 1980s, after graduating from Yale University. After a handful of roles in Boyz n the Hood (1991), Reva Styles (1992), and Tina Turner (1993), Bassett made her acting debut in the biopic "What's Love has to Do With It". The film brought the actress the Academy Award nomination for Best Actress. Her roles include Betty Shabazz (1992) in Malcolm X and Panther (1995), Katherine Jackson (1992), Voletta Wallace (1992) as well as Coretta Scott King (2013) in Betty & Coretta. Other notable film roles include Bernandine Harris in Waiting to Exhale (1995), Rachel Constantine in Contact (1997), Stella Payne in How Stella Got Her Groove Back (1998), Janet Williams in Music of the Heart (1999), Lynne Jacobs in Olympus Has Fallen (2013) and London Has Fallen (2016), and the role of Queen Ramonda in Black Panther (2018), Avengers: Endgame (2019) and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022).On television, Bassett's portrayal of Rosa Parks in the television film The Rosa Parks Story (2002) was rewarded with a nomination for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Miniseries or a Series or Movie. In 2013, Bassett had a recurring role in the FX horror anthology series American Horror Story: Coven, earning a nomination for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in an Miniseries or a Movie. She was an episode regular on Freak Show, the series in its fourth season, playing Desiree Dupree. For this role, she received another Primetime Emmy Award nomination. In the fifth season of the show, Hotel, she portrayed Ramona Royale, who was a well-known film star. Bassett returned to the series's sixth season, Roanoke as an alcohol-dependent actress called Monet Tumusiime, who plays struggling mother and ex-police officer Lee Harris in the My Roanoke Nightmare documentary. In addition, she reprised her role as Marie Laveau in a guest role in the eighth season Apocalypse. In 2018, Bassett began producing and playing in the Fox first series for responders 9-1-1. She is playing LAPD Patrol sergeant Athena Grant.
