Pence was awarded the Republican nomination for the 2012 Indiana governor's race following Mitch Daniels, who was a legislator with a limited term, resigned. In the most competitive gubernatorial contest in the past 50 years, he beat John R. Gregg, the former speaker of the Indiana House. Pence has signed numerous legislation to restrict abortions and even banned abortions in cases where the reason is the gender, race, or disability. Pence was the first to sign the Religious Freedom Restoration Act. The bill was met with a strong protests from prominent businessmen and moderates in his party , and LGBT supporters. Pence was required to amend the RFRA to prohibit discrimination based on gender identity, sexual orientation and other factors. This resulted in Pence being removed from the gubernatorial reelection campaign. On 20 January 2017 Pence was elected vice president of the United States. Pence was vice president of the National Space Council, which was established in June of 2017. Pence was appointed as chairman of the White House Coronavirus Task Force in February 2020. The task force was established as a reaction to the COVID-19 epidemic that was sweeping the United States.
