International Women's Day

International Women's Day (IWD), a worldwide holiday, is celebrated on the 8th of March every year. It was created by the Socialist Party of America in New York City on February 28 1909. This prompted German participants to the 1910 International Socialist Women's Conference to propose "a particular Women's Day" be organized annually, albeit without a specific date. in the next year, there were the first demonstrations and commemorations of International Women's Day across Europe. When women were granted suffrage in Soviet Russia in 1917 (the beginning of the February Revolution), IWD was declared a national holiday on March 8;[9] it was later celebrated on that day by the socialist movement and communist countries. The holiday was associated with left-wing movements and governments until its adoption by the global feminist movement in the 1960s. IWD was accepted as a major global holiday following its adoption by the United Nations in 1977.International Women's Day is celebrated in a variety of ways across the globe. It is a day of celebration in many countries, and is celebrated by locals or in a social setting in some to honor and highlight the achievements of women. The UN observes the holiday as a result of a specific issue such as a campaign or theme on women's rights. In certain parts around the globe, IWD still reflects its political origins, being marked by protests and calls for radical change. In other places, in particular in the West IWD is mostly sociocultural and centered on celebrating women's achievements.
