His birthplace was Encino, California. He was enrolled at the College of Continuing Education, an institution that was open to students of all ages "with no formal admissions prerequisites". However, he was able to stay in the Beta Theta Pi fraternity home, which, according to the fraternity's spokesman, was because it was not uncommon for students who were not matriculating to be associated with the fraternity.
