Jo Koy was the son of an white American father and an Filipina mother. After graduating of the high school of Tacoma the family relocated to Tacoma, Washington and then to Las Vegas. He was a student at Spanaway Lake High School, after which he transferred to Foss High School. He relocated to Las Vegas with his grandmother who was sick. Jo Koy was a student at the University of Nevada in Las Vegas however, he quit to pursue stand-up comedy. The stand-up show he performed in Phoenix, Arizona on September 22nd, 2019, revealed that the actor was discussing the name of his stage with his cousin back in 1989, when his aunt came to him and yelled "Jo Ko!" (Ko means "my" in Tagalog, so Jo Ko means "my Jo"). He was confused and thought she meant "Koy" and has been using it ever since.
