McLaughlin was an actor in his debut role as an actor, playing the part of an infant in the musical Lost in the Stars in Cooperstown at the Glimmerglass Oper House. His first major role was on Broadway as Young Simba in The Lion King musical (2012-14). In the following years, he was an actor on TV series such as Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and Unforgettable. McLaughlin's breakout part in 2016 was that of Lucas Sinclair on the Netflix popular series Stranger Things (2016-2018). He was nominated to the BET YoungStars Award in 2017 and was awarded the award for Outstanding Performance by a Young Person at the NAACP Image Awards 2018. In 2020, McLaughlin made his feature film debut in Concrete Cowboy, co-starring with Idris Elba and Jharrel Jerome. The film received praise from critics. [7][8] McLaughlin was honored on the Forbes 30 under 30 Class of 2020 list in the fields of entertainment and Hollywood in December 2020.
